KRAUSE, Gustav Herman Robert "Bob"
We are very saddened to announce that Bob passed away September 24, 2018 at home surrounded by his family. He was 83. He was born on St Patrick's Day in 1935 in Schreiber and lived there all but 2 years. He appreciated and was humbled by the outpouring of love and support he received throughout his illness and especially in his final days. He met and married Doris Burton in Sudbury in 1955. They shared 63 years together and raised 6 children. His family was his pride and joy. And he also took his role as patriarch to his extended family very seriously. His formal education only went to grade 10 but his real world education was endless. He worked as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator on construction and then as a prison guard for a short time. He also had his pilot's license. He worked many other jobs until he joined the railroad and worked his way up to engineer. He retired in 1992.
His approach to life was a practical, logical and common sense one. He treated all people with respect and non-judgement. He was sometimes known as "the friendly giant" because of his 6 ft 6 1/2 inch stature and he had a heart to match. He was a great community ambassador. If you found yourself in need of help, Bob would be there and if he couldn't, he could always put you in touch with someone that could. He was very proud of his home town. If you met Bob anywhere from Canada to Europe to South Africa, you came away knowing where Schreiber, Ontario was.
It was this pride and need to make a difference that led him into politics. He ran for town council in 1972 and served for a total of 26 years including 12 years as mayor and was still active as councillor until his death. He served on many boards including the Thunder Bay District Housing board and CCAC board. He was also vice chair of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for a number of years. He volunteered with the Schreiber food bank.
Over the years he made many, many friends and they were all very important to him. He was known to many as Krooner. He loved to sing and whistle and he would often belt out a tune. He will be heard in heaven singing "Wasn't that a party!"
It was his practical and common sense approach that also got him through his battle with cancer. He lived each day to the fullest and believed that death was just part of the life cycle. He thought of himself as very blessed.
He was predeceased by his parents Ida and Gustav Krause, and his grandson Karl Krause, mother-in-law Ethel Boyd, sister-in-law Mildred and brother-in-law Marl. He is survived by his wife Doris and his children Kim (Shane) of Schreiber, Arlene (Hugh) McCorry of Marathon, Victoria Dye (Vernon), Dan (Karen), Robert (Brenda), Christopher (Jennifer) all of Schreiber, grandchildren Victoria, Bellan (Heather), Kristine (Wayne), Daniel (Jody), Peter, Michael (Brittini), Kathleen, Vaughn, and Zoey and 6 great grandchildren. Also survived by his brother Ernie (Fay) of Thunder Bay and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 29th at 1 pm at the Schreiber Recreation Centre, all are welcome.
It is with great sadness the Township shares the news of the passing of Councillor Bob Krause. Our Mayor for 12 years and Councillor for 14 more Bob never tired of working to make Schreiber a better place. We were very fortunate to have his wisdom, guidance and perseverance. Our hearts go out to his wife Doris and his entire extended family. Details of service will follow when available.
Thank You for your patience and cooperation
