GREEN NEWS
The following is a list of some of the exciting initiatives being carried out by different groups in the Terrace Bay and Schreiber region to improve our environment. Also, below is a list of some GREEN websites, regional GREEN product/service companies, and various GREEN resources to help residents and businesses learn about ways they can lead a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
Free E-Waste Recycling in Thunder Bay
Residents throughout Northwestern Ontario can now recycle their old televisioin sets and laptops free of charge in Thunder Bay. Pack Pros Plus has recently been certified by the Ontario Electronic Stewardship for the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment program. The initiative is funded by the Ministry of Environment, and allows residents to drop off their e-waste at no cost (regional residents are responsible to transport materials to Thunder Bay themselves without compensation). Pack Pros Plus will accept the following e-waste: desktop computers, laptop computers, periphals such as mice, keyboards, disk drives, desktop printers, fax machines, televisions and computer monitors. Televisions and computer monitors need to be intact without broken screens to be accepted. Pack Pros Plus is located at 1439 Rosslyn Road and the hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 8:30am until 5:00pm. The company's phone number is (807) 344-8799 or toll-free (866) 344-8799 and its email address is info@packprosplus.com.
Increased Home Renovation Grants
The Federal and Provincial governments have increased grant amounts available under the EcoEnergy program for homeowners by 25%. The grants can be used to carry out home renovations aimed at improving energy efficiency including adding insulation, replacing furnaces or air conditioners, new windows, and many more. The grants are also in addition to the recently announced home renovation tx rebate in the 2009 Federal Budget.
Wind Power Development Proposed for Schreiber

Recycling in Schreiber
The Township of Schreiber is continuing to develop a means to provide recycling throughout the Township. In the past six months, extensive research on the process, funding partners, and regional service providers has been carried out. The Township is not only examining recycling, but also waste management as a whole. A waste management group was formed with municipal, commercial, and industrial partners and discussions have focused on how to improve the overall process. A meeting with other Townships interested in forming a regional partnership will be held in November and a plan could be suggested before the end of the year with service returning sometime in the New Year if feasible.

Smart Meters
Hydro One installed Smart Meters throughout Schreiber. Smart meters allow Hydro One to receive real time wireless updates on how much power is being consumed by a home or business. This provides for a more accurate reading and the future use of time-of-use pricing. Time of use pricing is expected to be introduced shortly after the 2010 deadline for installing the smart meters. It will involve different electricity pricing at different times of day and season to promote using energy at off-peak hours and reduce the peak demand levels. For more information visit the
Smart Meters website.
Energy Meter available for lending
Economic Development now has available for lending an energy meter! This device, which can be signed out for a five day loan period, connects to your home appliances and tells you how much electricity each appliance is using. Great for homeowners who are trying to reduce their electric energy consumption! For more information contact Anthony at 824-4638.
Retire Your Ride Program
The Retire Your Ride Program is an initiative of the Government of Canada, Clean Air Foundation and its partners, designed to enable people to get their high-polluting cars off the road and reward them for doing so. The program is committed to improving air quality by responsible recycling vehicles and aims to retire at least 50,000 vehicles per year until March 31, 2011. If you decide to retire a vehicle that is a 1995 model or older that is in running condition and has been registered and properly insured for the past six months, this program will give you $300.00. Your vehicle will then be recycled. For more information, please go to the
